![]() ![]() This is the first post- The Last of Us release for developer Naughty Dog, and it clearly suffers for it. Uncharted 4 undoubtedly has the stronger narrative, but staunchly focuses on its setting, story and characters to the detriment of the gameplay and ultimately the player’s enjoyment. Uncharted hasn’t provided any real innovation since it’s second installment – 2009’s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves - while the Tomb Raider series has not only managed to completely reinvent itself, but also effectively propel the genre forward for the new generation. ![]() Having said all that, what other games are suitable alternatives to TR? I've seen the Uncharted series mentioned but I'm concerned that it will be too action focused for my tastes. This generation though has seen a complete U-turn for both franchises. Maybe my age is starting to show afterĪll but reading through several threads about TR and gaming in general it seems as if I am far from the only one that feels this way. It also seems as if there is a general gaming focus on the packaging (graphics and cinematics) instead of content (great gameplay). TBH I also didn't enjoy the emphasis on the overly long cinematic cutscenes but this seems to be a trend with most newer games (Metal Gear Solid V, GTA5, God of War etc.). The snuff film aspects of Lara's deaths were also a bit disturbing. There are many games that do both much better, what made TR special was the puzzle solving aspects of the originals. I also feel as if there is too great a focus on the violence and shooting action. The tombs are not really integrated into the path through the game, they feel like an afterthought, things to waste time on once you've completed the main part of the game. There were barely any of the old style puzzles that needed to be solved, and the puzzles that require solving to progress are rather obvious and simple for the most part. While the game looks fantastic and is very cinematic, it was disappointingly easy to complete. The puzzle solving was integrated in such a way that made it a natural part of the gameplay instead of a supplement.Īfter a hiatus of a decade and skipping the PS3 entirely, I recently got myself a PS4 and was excited to play TR Definitive Edition. I also enjoyed TR Anniversary on the PS2, which I found to be quite similar to TR2. The general exploring required to progress through the fame and focus on puzzles instead of action proved enjoyable. I loved the problem solving and the finger gymnastics required of some of the jumping and hanging etc. Subreddit Banner edited for r/TombRaider by u/JadedDarknessīackground: I'm an 'older' gamer and I have very fond memories of TR2 on the PC in particular.
